August Beauty Breakdown

August Beauty Breakdown

Hi Friends! In an effort to streamline this site a little bit, I’ve decided to combine all of my monthly beauty posts into one large beauty post each month. All of my beauty box reviews and product reviews will now be in one place!

The first order of business this month is to talk about an unbelievable beauty deal I scored from QVC that has led me to one of my new favorite products! A fashion blogger I follow directed me to a deal that QVC was running where you receive two tubes of It Cosmetics Your Skin but Better CC Cream as well as their Heavenly Luxe Bye Bye Foundation Brush for $54.98. This is a ridiculous deal because the CC creams are usually $39 each and the brush is normally $48. Thats a total of $126, for $54.98. These are the deals that I live for! You can also get an additional 5% off if it is your first time ordering from QVC. I’m not sure how long the sale will be going on for, but here is a link.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to try this because I had received a small sample of this once and thought it was just okay. I’m always down to give something a second chance and I knew regardless that I would love the brush. WOW, this stuff is amazing. I may have received an old sample the first time around because this product is off the charts good. It has amazing coverage for a CC cream. When you combine it with the foundation brush which is also amazing, the results are flawless. I purchased the light color which isn’t super light but perfect for summer when I have a tan. If you are super fair, you will want to go lighter than the light shade. It takes a lot for a foundation/cc cream to impress me, but this one is definitely going straight into my everyday favorites pile.

Next topic, all things lashes! I always wanted to learn how to do lashes but I was pretty intimidated by the whole process. Finally in June I decided it was time to learn how to do lashes for myself at home. I went to Sephora for a complimentary lash application and, as always, I was so thrilled with my experience. The nicest makeup artist took the time to walk me through what she was doing and give me a breakdown so that I could do them myself in the future. (If you have never taken a class at Sephora or signed up for a complimentary service, do it! I have done both and been extremely happy both times). Anyway, the makeup artist fit me into the perfect beginner lashes. The reason she recommended these is because they are natural and require no trimming. She also used the duo glue which I was familiar with because the few times I’ve had my makeup professionally applied, they have always used duo. Here is a link to the lashes I purchased, the Velour Effortless Lashes in “Would I Lie?” These are amazing. When well cared for they can be worn up to twenty times. Here is a link to the duo glue I purchased as well. Fast forward a month and a half and I am addicted to lashes! I don’t wear them day to day but anytime a night out or special occasion comes up, I am running to grab my lashes! I practiced on that first pair so many times that their lifespan was cut pretty short so it was time for me to purchase a new set. I went online to Sephora and found two great deals from Velour.

The first one is the Effortless Kit. This is a great deal because it comes with the Would I Lie Lashes, gold lash applicator, and their brand of glue for $29. Considering the lashes themselves are normally $26, this is a good buy. The second one, which is currently sold out but will hopefully be back soon, is The Starter Lash Kit. This one is similar to the effortless kit but has the Momma Knows Best lashes, gold lash applicator and glue. In my opinion, the Momma Knows Best lashes are a little fuller and less natural than the Would I Lie option. I would definitely recommend starting with the Would I Lie and moving towards the Momma Knows best from there.

I should note, that I tried the Velour glue and I absolutely hate it. It made my sensitive eyes hurt and it was impossible to remove from my lashes. Days later I was still painstakingly removing glue spots from my real lashes. Although the glue being added in is a nice bonus, I don’t recommend using it. I threw mine away.

I am so happy with the quality of these lashes I will definitely stay committed to this brand for that reason. I recently received some Huda lashes in my Allure Box for July and although the quality was great, they were called natural but were way too dramatic for me. That experience made me really appreciate the Velour brand and I will stay loyal to them.

Another thing I love about the Would I Lie lashes that are individually sold, is that they come in a really high quality acrylic case. The case is perfect for keeping the lash applicator and glue in and taking with you in your purse for the night. I always like to have extra glue on me when I’m out and about with lashes just in case, and this acrylic case is perfect.

Take a look at the photos below and see if you think these kits would be a good fit for you.

Next lets break down the Birchbox samples for August. Here is what I received in this months box:

Comfort Zone Essential Face Wash: The texture of this cleanser is nice, but the scent was too perfume-y for my liking. There are so many great cleansers out there that I would choose over this option, it is just okay.

Leila Lou Eau De Parfum by Rosie Jane : I’ve written numerous times about my love for by Rosie Jane fragrances. It is my favorite brand and I highly recommend all of their scents.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment : I have received this product in way too many beauty boxes. The very first time I used it I liked it, but after that I wasn’t impressed. I’m not sure why it changed for me, but overall I don’t find this to be hydrating enough for my dry hair.

Love of Color One and Done Shadow Stick- Empress Me: This is a very impressive product. It is really smooth and easy to apply and has great color payoff. I love the color “empress me” it is a coppery bronze tone that is really flattering. I highly recommend this.

Model Co Lip Plumper Hydra Lip Therapy: This is a really nice product but I do think that the name “lip plumper” is deceiving. It’s an extremely hydrating lip treatment that will in some way make your lips look a bit fuller due to the hydration, but it is not a traditional lip plumper like other products out there. If you are looking for something moisturizing, this is worth trying.

Oribe Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream : I’m usually not an Oribe fan at all, but this is a good product. I noticed after I used it that my hair was extremely shiny. I wish it was slightly more hydrating, but overall it’s one of the best Oribe products I’ve ever used.

Next up is my monthly Allure Beauty Box. I am consistently blown away by the quality and value of these boxes.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara I reviewed this product last year, and I still think it is just okay. There are other mascaras out there I enjoy more.

Erno Laszlo Multi-Task Eye Serum Mask These eye masks contain allantoin which is a moisturizing agent that is said to plump up lines around your eyes. The patches are comfortable, cooling and stay in place well, but I didn’t really see any results.

Primera Alpine Berry Water Cream I’ve tried so many brands the past few years and it is always exciting to me to try a new brand for the first time. I have never used Primera before and I was pleasantly surprised with this product. It’s called a water cream and usually I don’t like water creams because the name implies that it is more of a gel consistency. This one is a cream consistency and it is lightweight but hydrating. This is a great product for summer.

Nuria Defend Triple Action Eye Cream I am always on the hunt for a good eye cream and I have never used anything by this brand before so I was excited to try this. This product has a nice cooling sensation and feels hydrating. It has a smoothing tip on the bottle but I actually didn’t really like that because I thought it made it more difficult to apply. I’m not sure how this will work long term with hydrating and firming the eye area, but so far I am enjoying it.

Cargo Cosmetics Essential Lip Color – Bombay I immediately noticed that I really liked the packaging of this product. It feels heavy which I equated with quality. The lipstick itself has a nice consistency, and is hydrating. The color Bombay is a little darker than what I normally wear, but I will save it for fall and give it a try then. Overall, a really nice product.

Laritzy Liquid Beam in Topaz I have a soft spot for Laritzy because the only product of theirs I have ever used, is the lipgloss from an Allure box that I became obsessed with. I don’t really wear liquid highlighters because they tend to be a little too bold for me. This one seems to be a little too glittery for my taste, but if you like liquid highlighters you may want to give it a try. It’s a good quality product, just not my style.

Makeup Eraser The Mini I’ve been obsessed with having a Makeup Eraser since I first saw one used. This product is very unique, I haven’t come across anything else like it. It removes all of your makeup with just water. It is much more eco friendly than disposable makeup wipes and it is advertised to actually work better. The way it works is that you soak it in warm water, use the short fiber side to erase your makeup gently and then flip to the longer fiber side to exfoliate. That’s it! It is also easily machine washable so it should last you a while. Over time, it will be much more cost effective than disposable makeup wipes too. Overall, I think it is a pretty good product, but my face didn’t feel 100% clean. I would probably use this in conjunction with other items in a routine.

Next up is this month’s Sephora Play Box.

Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick – Dance Fever – I LOVE the Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick and have it in other colors, but this color, Dance Fever, is way too dark for me. I will definitely not wear this shade.

Bare Minerals Dew Mist Setting Spray – My complaints about this product are mostly limited to it’s packaging. I couldn’t really tell if the product itself was good because it sprayed out in very heavy streams that pretty much ruined my makeup. I prefer my setting sprays to have a soft mist that settles. For that reason, I wouldn’t use this again.

Glamglow Supertoner – I’m usually a big fan of Glamglow but I didn’t think there was anything special about this toner. I didn’t notice any results. You may need to use it over a longer period of time, but I don’t like it enough to purchase and experiment with it.

Sunday Riley A+ High Does Retinol Serum– I like Sunday Riley a lot, and I think this serum is pretty good, but not enough to justify the price point. There are too many other serums I love more for less, like this amazing vitamin c serum from Amazon!

Clinique Moisture Surge 72 Hour Auto Replenishing Hydrator – I wanted to like this product because I am always looking for hydrating creams, but this one made my skin break out really badly. For that reason, I wouldn’t use this again.

Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Creme – I recently received this product in my April Allure Box, and while I think it might be a good fit for some, my hair is too dry for this creme.
